If you are a certified diver who likes facing up to the fearsome Great White Shark, then be sure to check out the Protea Banks shark diving site. It is one of the best shark diving locations in South Africa, and is approximately 90 minutes from Durban by car, 8km offshore from Shelly Beach. If shark diving is your thing (it’s one a hell of a thrill for sure!), then make an appointment and come to this advanced shark diving centre for some hair-raising shark encounters.
Here you will also find large schools of pelagic fish, rays species like the Spotted Eagle and Manta rays, and ample species of sharks, with the Tiger, Hammerhead, Ragged Tooth, Bull and Sand Shark healthy in supply. Naturally, the great to-be-seen shark, the Great White, can be witnessed and studied extensively in its natural predatory milieu, so watch out for this great pre-historic king of the underworld. At Protea Banks you will be diving at depths that vary between 25 to 40 meters, with temperatures warm during the summer at 24 degrees Celsius, and milder in the winter at around 19 degrees Celsius. Depending on the weather, dives usually take place in the mornings, whilst in the afternoons you’ll have plenty of time to explore the area on your own.
If shark diving is not exactly your cup of tea, or if you just want additional excitement beside the face-face shark encounters, do some abseiling and snorkeling, or go gorge swing one of the highest swings on earth, or play some of the great golf coursers along the Durban coastal region. Whatever you do, you’ll have a wonderful coastal adventure guaranteed.
