Study in Durban

Durban, South Africa, is a beautiful city that stretches along a coastline of golden beaches in a subtropical climate. The 3rd largest city in South Africa, it has a community of vastly mixed cultures and peoples. The institutions in the area range from accomplished technical schools to well established Universities, and recognized language colleges. Whether you plan to study full time, part time, or to brush up your English while on holiday, Durban will have something to offer you.

Culture

Durban is home to European, African and Indian peoples in an even mix that makes for a vibrant and varied cultural environment. The land was originally inhabited by the Zulu tribes, who are well known for their famous King Shaka Zulu. Despite an intense resistance the Zulu people were eventually conquered by invading European troops. Zulus still make up a huge part of the population in Durban and there are many opportunities to visit sites of cultural heritage and to learn more about the tribe.

The first European settlement was in 1823, when a man named James King realised the usefulness and potential of the area. He tried to gain support from his countrymen but was largely on his own. King Shaka Zulu granted him land in the area and he began a small colony. Although the area was inhabited by Europeans since 1823, at times the colony numbered as few as 15 people. It was only in the late 1800’s that the area became strategically useful as a port and more settlers were drawn by the fertile farmlands and reduced Zulu influence.

In the 1860’s the first Indian people were transported to Durban. Many were indentured workers who were transported as slaves. However, the ships also carried free men who wished to visit South Africa to pursue the reportedly excellent business opportunities. Although Indian people later became marginalized due to the Apartheid laws, the communities were well established and continued to thrive. To this day, Indian culture is strongly evident throughout the city.

Nature and local attractions

Durban is not only a beautiful city; it is also the center of a gorgeous province that boasts a large range of activities and natural attractions. The warm Indian Ocean itself offers a number of activities, including scuba diving on beautiful reefs, surfing and kite surfing among others.

The city is also close to several game reserves that offer views of South Africans’ famous big cats and the Big 5. The game reserves are ideally situated for a weekend getaway or a short visit but offer enough variety for a longer stay.

If you are looking for a more cosmopolitan experience, Durban is also known for its myriad casinos, shopping centers, flea markets, theaters and museums.

With such a wide variety of entertainment and attractions, Durban is an ideal location for the student who wishes to explore.
