The Drakensberg is a paradise for mountaineers and hikers. Hike through shaded valleys, lush forests, under shimmering waterfalls and over looming mountains. There are so many fascinating landmarks that can be reached, especially with the Amphitheatre in the Northern Drakensberg. The formation is unparalleled in its beauty, is one of the most photographed formations of the entire Drakensberg. So if you decide to mountaineer up the Drakensberg, take the popular Amphitheatre route.
A climb up the Amphitheatre can be done by almost anyone, as you pass by the Sentinel and contour a way to the place where one uses chain ladders so as to get up to the Mont-Aux-Sorces Plateau, which interestingly is the source of many of the province’s rivers, including the mighty Tugela. The Amphitheatre is round about 3000 meter above sea level and from its edge you will witness views of great beauty as you see how the mighty Tugela falls disappear into the vast valleys and mountains far below the Amphitheatre. As you make your way back down, appreciate again the beauty of this rare formation from the ground. It truly is a magnificent sight.
You can always take the Tugela Gorge Hike from the Royal Natal National Park for a slightly different but as impressive view. With its immense overhangs and marvelous rock pools, the Tugela Gorge hike offers you stunning scenery of the Sentinel, Devils Tooth and Amphitheatre as you hike alongside the winding Tugela river.
