browse (1 / 4)

Located on the north bank of the Umgeni River (just off Riverside Road, Durban North) is the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve. It is, at its name suggest, renowned for its large numbers of mangrove trees. This 76 hectare reserve has the largest population of mangrove trees in the Durban area, and is also used as Nature Conservation Centre.

Expect to see great quantities of black, red and white mangrove swamp, not to mention real sea snails, whilst creeping plants and pioneer scrub habitats the shoreline. Take the tree available reserve trails that will either take you to swamp or bird hide. Yes, and watch out for the diversity of birdlife that subsists in the area, includes the rare Mangrove Kingfisher and the rare Natal Nightjar. Entry to the Reserve is free of charge, but visits are only on Saturdays and Sundays, so scrap your weekend itinerary, and see some indigenous mangrove trees for yourself. Rather similar to Beachwood is the lovely coastal reserve of Umlalazi, 1 km from Mtunzini, and situated along the edge of the Umlalazi river. This large protected area is also home of the rarest birds of prey in South Africa, the Palmnut Vulture.

At Umlalazi, great examples of mangrove swamp forest can be seen, with several different specie of mangrove around every corner. Of course, the wild variety of birdlife will keep birdwatchers busy, and some interesting wildlife such as the bushpig and bushpig, as well as number of duikers in the reserve. Like Beachwood, three distinct trails have been laid out, so be the nature love that you are, and express your love for this beautiful scenic province.
