Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa is the province with the most number of registered paddlers, mainly due to the many strong and kayak-friendly rivers scattered all over the province. Of course, Kwazulu-Natal is also home to a number a prestige races during the River season, with the Umgeni, Umsindus, Tugela and Umzimkulu rivers proving very popular.

Kayak safaris, like the one in the St Lucia Estuary, are also growing in popularity, and is a fun way for family and friends to spend quality time together and still have great fun and adventure at the same time. And with the magnificent St Lucia Estuary, with its glimmering tidal waters and variety of fauna and flora in the background, you’ll find this experience more than just a good paddle. When you climb into your Kayak in St Lucia, expect the best nature has to offer. Paddle around the mangrove nested islands and idle basking crocodiles (yes, crocodiles!), with fishing water-birds foraging the rich water for food. Be on the lookout for the ever-present fish eagle, and see friendly hippos resting in the shallow river waters, or just playing with their young on the grassy sandbanks.

This a wonderful place to enjoy nature at its fullest, and whether you’re novice or a veteran, the fairly generous waters of the area will make it suitable for paddlers of all abilities. Just remember to bring along your suncream, hat, towel, and a reasonable amount of clothes (you’ll get wet just about anywhere), and you’ll be ready to go and have a kayak safari ‘extravaganza’.
