Durban's Cathedrals And Churches

Durban's Cathedrals and Churches
browse (1 / 4)

There are a number of cathedrals and churches to be admired when you are visiting the city of Durban. The Emmanuel Cathedral, once located in the shaded stillness of Cathedral Street, now finds itself within the hubbub of the inner city. This architectural gem recently celebrated its centenary, and was a hit with tourists and locals.

Opened in 1904, the Cathedral stood through the apartheid era of South Africa, and showcased alot of history and symbolism of its time. In the mid 1980’s, the Cathedral was a hotspot of intense political strife, since it championed human rights and equality throughout its long and troubled existence. The Cathedral has undergone renovations over the years, but its memories still remain central to the city’s history. The breathtaking Roman Catholic Church in Durban is another infamous religious landmark of the city. Built in 1909, this Gothic Revival and Edwardian church is probably Durban's most valuable church of the city centre. The stained glass windows and memorial tablets record much of Durban's interesting history, and is an admirable showcase to times gone by.

St. Thomas' Church is an architectural marvel in the Musgrave area in Durban with wonderful features that include a high vaulted wooden ceiling, stained glass windows and a baptismal front. Over 100 years old, it is housed in a beautiful, old stone building. This renowned church is still used occasionally for weddings and funerals, and makes for another historic Durban landscape to be admired and respected.
