4x4 Natal Excursions
From the miraculous mountain range of the Drakensberg into the wilderness areas in Maputuland, the Natal Midlands, or just the magnificent KwaZulu-Natal coastline. A good place to start a 4x4 trek is at the little town of Cedarville, situated on the foothills of the most southern Drakensberg mountains. Not only is Cedarville the gateway to three magnificent mountain passes into Lesotho (all within an hours drive), so expect to be challenged and spoilt for choice. If you’re worried about accommodation, be sure to know lodging in the Drakensberg is plentiful, so you can gather with family and friends have a wonderful time.. 45 minutes from Pietermaritzburg and 90 minutes from Durban is the town of Dlangala in the Umkomaas Valley. Here you will find some of the most challenging 4x4 routes in the country, while the spectacular scenery of the Umkomaas Valley provides a magnificent backdrop to an exhilarating journey. As you progress deeper into the valley you’ll soon begin to discover an abundance of bird and wildlife greeting you with sounds and echo’s distinctly African.
There are a number of tour operators on standby for both novice and experienced drivers on the various 4x4 trails. Some trails can outright tricky, with difficult crossings, muddy terrain, cliff faces, log bridge, and narrow little bush paths all waiting to ensnare 4x4 drivers. Regardless of the challenges drivers will face, the guided trails afford a great chance to travel down scenic pathways to places most people have never seen, and probably never will.
