UMKO RAFTING started commercial rafting on the stretch of water between Hella Hella and Number 8 rapid in 1999 and to date are the only experienced operators on this extreme stretch of water. All trips are under the guidance of experienced UMKO RAFTING River Guides, with more than 1000 injury free trips you’re in the safest hands on the river , you can relax and enjoy the adventure!
UMKO RAFTING offers a range of dynamic packages for persons seeking high adventure or a slightly more sedate excursion.
Situated only 95km from Durban and 65km from Pietermaritzburg, the Mkomazi River provides a challenging yet pristine environment for both the first timers and the seasoned veterans. The Mkomazi River boasts some of the best rapids to be found in South Africa, with the Section from Hella Hella to Number 8 being regarded as the biggest traversable Whitewater south of the Zambezi.
The White Water trips start at the Richmond Country Club, where transfers are provided to the start and finish of each Section. The trips start at 8.30am and finish between 2 and 6pm (Depending on the river level and the trip selected). Lunch and light refreshments are provided on the river for a Full Day. Rafters are issued with necessary equipment - paddles, lifejackets, helmets etc. All trips are led by experienced, APA registered River Guides.
We specialize in groups and corporate Team Building, tailor making your function to suit your requirements. We are able to arrange Accommodation and other Adventure activities to ensure that your escape to the bush is a memorable experience.
For those wishing for a more relaxed and accessible outing, we have added a Dawn Patrol to our activities. This Ocean Rafting experience departs early from the Durban beach front.
The Mkomazi River has its source at the top of the Drakensberg mountains and winds its way down to the Indian Ocean through the Midlands of Kwazulu Natal. At a point near Hella Hella, the Valley takes on a mix of bushveld and tropical scenery, a wilderness largely untouched by civilization.
Our season begins again in December 2006 for one ady and multi day white water rafting trips.
