Mkhuze

A bird-watcher's paradise can be found at this place of great splendor and high distinction, with more than 420 bird species documented, Mkhuze has an astonishing diversity of natural surroundings, from the eastern inclines of the Lebombo mountains along its eastern border, to comprehensive stretches of acacia savanna, swamps and a selection of woodlands and riverine jungle.

Visitors can revel in the sight of black and white rhinoceros, giraffe, elephant, leopard, buffalo, fish eagles snatching prey as the swoop over the pans as well as a variety of antelope and other creatures that roam this wild neighbourhood of Mkhuze.

Accommodation at Mkhuze consists of:

A scope of facilities accessible to nature lovers. Among this is the renowned self-catering Tented Safari Camp, Mantuma Camp. The encampment hosts ten 2 bed and three 4 bed tented units. Each unit has an en-suite ablution facility that includes warm and cool showers and a personal open plan kitchenette containing a fridge and electricity is promptly available. Mantuma Camp has been skilfully planned to blend into its biological surroundings and offers nearby facilities such as a swimming pool to cool off in on those sweltering hot days, a little restaurant with restricted seating and take-aways and a camp office that has a stock of curio's, clothing, basic food supplies and refreshments.

Mantuma Camp hosts two 6-bed cottages, four 2-bed chalets and five 4-bed chalets. There are also six 2-bed rest huts that are served by a central kitchen and communal facilities.

Food and beverages are not supplied so please bring your own. A torch is would also come in handy. Units are serviced on a daily basis, although visitors are expected to do their own cooking and washing up of dishes.

Sixty visitors can be accommodated at Emshompi Camping and caravanning area that is situated 1 km from the main entrance gate, and approximately 9 km from Mantuma Camp. Ablution blocks have both hot and cold water.

Nhlonhlela Bush Lodge sleeps eight people comfortably; it overlooks the majestic Nhlonhlela Pan. Each unit is en suite and is connected by boardwalks branching out from the shared kitchen and lounge areas. A field ranger is available to accompany visitors on game walks. Strong solar powered lighting serves the lodge however; good torches and a gaslight are recommended.

An educational camp consists of 4 dorms which can happily sleep 8 each, a communal kitchen and ablution facilities.

One can picnic at Nsumo Pan, Nxwala game viewing hide as well as next to the welcome area in the main camp. With over 100km of road available to visitors for game drives at Mkhuze, birding, spotting game and sitting silently in the three game viewing hides are some of the favorite things to do in Mkhuze. Night drives and guided walks can be arranged at the Camps.

"We visited your reserve and found the road to the Reserve in terrible condition with not very clear roadsighns. Roads in the reserve was reasonable, but we found lots of roadworks in the reserve frustrating as we drive around for gameviewing and found more people on the roads than game. The recommended viewing points were all under construction and not open to the public. We were very happy to see rhinocerus on our way out of the reserve on our last day."
