Every year millions of sardines travel northwards from the Eastern Cape to Kwazulu-Natal. These shoals have been recorded up to 15 kilometres in length, 3 kilometres wide and up to 40m deep. They travel close to shore and are followed by hundreds of predators including sharks, seals, dolphins, whales, penguins, birds and game fish. The predators break away pockets of Sardines from the main shoal, known as a bait ball resulting in a feeding frenzy, a silver spectacle of millions of sardines darting in all directions trying to escape the attack from hundreds of predators. This phenomenal activity is what is attracting divers and film crews from all over the world.
