Coedmore Castle

Coedmore Castle

Coedmore Castle is situated in the Stainbank Nature Reserve. Mrs Elizabeth Keith, granddaughter of the founder of 'Coedmore Castle', will show you around this magnificent home, which was also the home of the important sculptor, MARY STAINBANK and Robert Brusse will talk to you about its architecture.

The site on the south bank of the Umhlatuzana River is rich in history, being known as the Ndaba Nkulu during the reign of King Chaka. Dering Stainbank commissioned two Scottish stonemasons to build the 'castle in 1882.

Bring yourselves, friends, family, tea and the proverbial sticky buns, which you can enjoy in the garden where you may even see the friendly zebras. Tucked away in the heart of Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve is Coedmore - a gracious old family home built in 1885, over 120 years ago.

School Outings

A visit to Coedmore Castle makes an ideal outing for learners of all ages. Younger learners will be thrilled with it's fairy-tale appearance, whereas older children will gain valuable insight into some of KZN's early history.

Weddings and other outdoor functions

The hire of the spacious and tranquil garden makes Coedmore a perfect venue for a garden wedding or other outdoor functions.

Guided Tours

As the castle has remained in the family since it was built, it contains many of the original household contents giving a fascinating insight into life in a bygone era. Visitors will be taken on a guided tour through the home after which they will be served tea and scones.

Please note that all functions need to be booked for well in advance to avoid disappointment. Tours of 10 or more people are arranged.
