Propping up the strikingly beautiful, glowing Golden Gate Highlands National Park is the north eastern Free State’s Maluti mountain range. The area, home to the stunning Brandwag overhang, plays home to Glen Reenen rest camp ? a quiet, active and beautiful getaway, folded into one of the most impressive national parks on the continent. A perfect retreat spot for avid bird watchers, with numerous challenging and scenic hiking trails crisscrossing the area, Glen Reenen rest camp is a charming staging ground for a relaxing trip in the park.
Accommodation at Glen Reenen is available in a series of double bedded rondawel units, accommodating four guests per unit, with one unit being wheelchair accessible. All units come equipped with kitchens, wash counters and showers.
The longdawel units have single beds, and are also available in wheelchair friendly options. One extra unit also comes fitted with braai (barbecue) facilities, a kitchen and television.
Additionally, four family cottage units are equipped either with single or double-bedrooms, both with an additional stack bed for extra sleepers. Added to this is the additional two bedroom unit which (sleeping six guests), with a stack bed, and (like all other family units) braai (barbeque) facilities, fireplace, and television. For further accommodation options, the farmhouse is available to sleep six people in two bedrooms, complete with kitchen, fireplace, a shower and a bath.
Golden Gate Highlands national park offers a range of exciting and fun activities, some of which include the Rhebok hiking trail for eighteen person groups (advanced booking required). Additional trails are offered without prior booking, as well as leisurely game viewing available on an individual basis, from aboard your own vehicle. Holiday programs, an environmental education course, leisure sports are also available.
The park is home to huge populations of blesbok, eland, duiker, Grey Rhebok, and springbok, as well as steenbok and Red Haartebeest. The bird populations in the area are extensive and well suited to enthusiast looking for Black Stork, Cape Vulture, Martial Eagle, Jackal Buzzard, Rock Kestrel and Black and Alpine Swift.
