Zulu surf adventures

Zulu Surf Adventures is own and run by Sid Boulanger. Sid is easygoing and enjoys hunting for good waves and having fun outdoors. He has been living in Ballito, on the north coast of KZN, with his 2 dogs his whole life. He has been an avid surfer for 18 years, representing both Zululand and KZN surfing teams on numerous occasions. He is currently sponsored by Hutchison Handcrafted surfboards (previous sponsors include Quicksilver for 5 years and Oakley 3 years) and has surfed competitively for 15 years enjoying the glory of first place as well as coming last! Sid also own a glass company in Ballito which sells house and car glass which keeps him busy on onshore or flat days.

Sid is well travelled and has charged waves in Indo, Maldives, Australia, and Mozambique. The short boards that he rides are a 5"2" fish, and a 5''7'' and he uses 6''2'' guns. His favourite waves are sunrise in Ballito, secret spot in Mozambique and desert point in Sumbawa. His worst waves are anything in water below 15 degrees centigrade. Sid needs to surf every 2-3 days otherwise he gets grumpy.

Sids radical style of surfing has certainly left him with a number of injuries. He has compressed his back, cracked ribs, torn hamstrings and leg muscles, numerous stitches and roasties and has also puked from surfing. Sid has a dislike for crowds, cities and bluebottles, so you are guaranteed to getaway from it all! Sid is a qualified yacht skipper but, unfortunately, has no yacht. Sid will drive you up the coast while you sit back and relax, feet up, listening to his iPod (or bring your own!)

Sid will collect and drop you off at the airport.

All packages include:

Accommodation, breakfast, dinner and 100km per day with the tour guide and / or driver.

They do not include:

Lunch, hire of surfboards, and activities unless otherwise stated.

Package 1

5 days Mozambique + 5 days North Coast KZN. This package includes 5 nights Mozambique in wooden cabins and 5 nights Ballito in canvas tents. Ballito lies 50km north of Durban and is a holiday town which is busy during December and April so book early to get in . Breakfast and dinner are the meals included while staying in Ballito and while staying in Mozambique you will be provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Bars and swimming pools are provided at both venues. Shops and restaurants are available. This package is the best package to see 2 countries on a restricted time schedule.

Package 2

10 days Mamoli. The first night is spent in Ballito and we leave early the next morning to arrive in Mozambique for a surf. We spend 9 nights in Mozambique in wooden cabins in an exclusive resort that only sleeps 34 people. This is primarily a scuba diving resort and the wave itself is a "semi secret surf spot" with no crowds in the water. It is highly recommended to book early as this trip is very popular. A few cold beers at the bar at sunset is not to be missed and a swimming pool is provided for all to cool off during those hot summer months. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included but all drinks are at your own cost. This resort is as isolated as it gets with no shops or other accommodation nearby. No boats, jet skis or vehicles are permitted on the beach .This package is the most comfortable package on offer and for the surfer who wants to get there, chill, surf, eat and sleep!

Package 3

10 days North Coast. This package includes 10 days accommodation in Ballito and is a cheaper, backpacker style trip for the travelling surfer who wants to sacrifice some luxuries for a few extra days surf. Accommodation is tented or bunk beds with breakfast and dinner included. A swimming pool is provided along with pool table and bar.

Waves of the North coast

The waves on the north coast of KZN are powerful and hollow with lots of barrels. The waves break on sand or reef and vary depending on the wind and tide. Many of the professional surfers stop off in Ballito to get away from the contest scene in Durban and film surf movies and have photo shoots. Ballito has 9 different breaks within 10 minutes drive. The waves are mostly right handers on the predominately southerly swell, with a few lefts if the swell is in an easterly direction. KZN gets waves all year round, although the most consistent time of year is from January to September. September to November is usually the windiest time of year with April to July the best due to offshore winds blowing most mornings.
