Between the suburb of Sherwood and the industrial areas of Pinetown is the growing Westville area that grows minds in the Westville Campus of University of KwaZulu-Natal and the esteemed schools in the area. Westville develops businesses in the prestigious office parks that are being occupied by major companies. Westville’s commercial properties are in demand and the Pavilion Mall attracts shoppers from all over and is one of the largest malls in South Africa. The Westwood Shopping Centre is the new 35 000 m2 shopping centre in Westville. The R345-million construction contract is being developed by Retail Africa, and access will be from the M13 highway into a multi-level, 1 600-bay carpark.
With the M13 running through it, Westville is on the route of the world-famous Comrades Marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Traffic is a regular occurrence as Westville is bounded by the N3 and M19 freeways and offers easy access to all points of the KwaZulu-Natal Province.
Escaping the office, traffic and stress, the Durban Botanic Gardens is a popular attraction. The shop offers a wide variety of gifts such as Zulu baskets, beadwork and specialist books on South African flora and fauna. There is also conference, boardrooms and entertainment facilities for product launches, workshops, exhibitions and weddings.
Although west of Durban, Westville was named after Sir Martin West, Lieutenant-Governor of Natal in the mid-19th Century. His farm was transformed into this upmarket residential area and the area has expanded and developed into a commercial market.
