We make an early start, meandering through the rolling green hills of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands the Underberg. Here we board a 4x4 vehicle, the only means by which to tackle the steep Sani Pass.

At the top lies a remote border post - passports are essential - and beyond that, the Kingdom of Lesotho. We visit a traditional Sotho village and then enjoy lunch at the Sani Top Chalet, which has incredible views of the pass, before making our way back down the mountain.

"we were picked up in durban by cyril who drove us to underberg - he was a smart and nice man with good information along the route. in udnerberg we transferred along with a 6 other people to a 4x4 van for the climb up to the pass. The driver "elias" was excellent - witty, informative, passionate about his job and a very safe and experienced driver. The trip through the southern drakensberg is fantastic and the climb up to the pass unforgettable. The time at the top was also great - we had our passports stamped, visited a village home, had lunch at the highest pub in SA and then came back down and had the return trip with cyril back to durban. It was all very good, very well organised and highly recommended. One thing you need to know is that it is very cold on the pass so bring extra layers of warm clothes."
