Stellenbosch University is one of South Africa's four top research universities and has a distinguished history with humble beginnings. Originally the site of a school in the 17th Century, the University developed over time. First a Theological Seminary was founded, followed closely by the Stellenbosch Gymnasium and then an Arts Department. Collectively they became the Victoria College which made way for Stellenbosch University in 1918.
The University is situated in the Jonkershoek valley, surrounded by vineyards in an area famous for its wine production. The main campus is home to eight of the ten faculties, while the Faculty of Military Sciences is located in the seaside town of Saldhana, and the Health Sciences Faculty is located in Tygerberg. Together, they form a University with a broad and varied knowledge base, and with international recognition.
Stellenbosch University is geared to provide top class facilities for international students. They offer a wide range of courses for both summer school and full time study, and have a very successful 'free-movers' program that enables students to study several courses a semester for non-degree purposes, whilst enrolled at another university or visiting the country.
