Cranes Nest Mountain Lodge

Willy and Rosemarie Middleton originate initially from Pretoria and later from Johannesburg where they both ran their own successful businesses. In 1999 they made the decision to sell up and pursue the qualities of country life. This farm has aRosemarie and Willy Middleton very special ambience, which they immediately sensed and set about developing at a steady pace, especially once their long-standing friends Mark and Lynne Hughes joined them as partners. The owners love interacting with people and guests are made to feel special. As family-orientated people, the owners of Cranes Nest welcome their guests with warm hospitality and hands-on personal attention. They are prepared to 'walk the extra mile' to make your stay a memorable one.

South Africa has three species of these majestic birds - the Wattled Crane, the Blue Crane and the Crowned Crane - sometimes referred to as "The Big Three". Worldwide there are 14 Crane species, most of which are listed as critically endangered in the Red Data Book. The Wattled Crane, identified by their bulbous wattles, which bobble and bounce around as they move, are by far the most endangered of the three. The Crowned Crane is either the most comical or the most regal, depending on your point of view and it is probably the least endangered of our species. The biggest and most noticeable of all critically endangered creatures in South Africa are the cranes, and while some have been rescued from the brink of extinction, their numbers are still cause for consternation.
