Giant's Castle

Within the Central Berg region of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, lies the Historical World Heritage Site, Giant's Castle Game Reserve, home of the eland as well as the magnificent bearded vulture.

Giant's Castle Camp is located on a grassy highland between the subterranean valleys originating from the face of the High Drakensberg with the most breath taking views for mountain climbers and hikers.

Special attractions include marvelous rock art. Watch the bearded vultures and other endangered species feeding from the well-known vulture restaurant; open in winter. For fascinating insight into the former times and lifestyle of the San people you can visit the main Caves Museum.

There are four mountain huts at Giants, three of which are positioned just below the most important escarpment. Each hut sleeps eight and offers easy access to a choice of passes of which to climb to get to the top of the Drakensberg range. The fourth hut also sleeps four and can be found a little lower down, on a ridge, overlooking the exquisite Meander Valley.

Its very appropriate name was derived from the peaks and escarpment silhouette, which resemble the profile of a sleeping giant.

The design theme of Giant's Castle Camp and Rock Lodge are Wild flowers of the Drakensberg, each chalet and all lodge buildings feature original botanical paintings.

The accommodation at Giant's Castle consist of:

37 of which are two-bed chalets each with en-suite amenities, a lounge/dining area as well as fully equipped kitchens: there are 3 four-bed chalets each with two bedrooms, a bathroom, a lounge/dining area and a fully appointed kitchen. "The surrounding and setting of Giant's Castle is beautiful and the staff at the front desk are very pleasant and helpful. Our room was very cozy and comfortable. However, the service at the restaurant was not acceptable. The gentleman that served us seemed to be a little intoxicated. He was very evasive about the menu and whilst we were eating our dinner he spent most of his time busy with personal telephone calls behind the desk. When we left the next morning the same man in question was in a vehicle with other staff members and it seemed that they had all been drinking alcohol. This was at 9:30am in the morning. When the door of the vehicle was opened to let a staff member in you could hear the empty bottles being kicked around inside the vehicle. "
