Information about Kosi Bay
Breath-Taking View from the Viewpoint
The Kosi Bay system of lakes and entire area is part of the Kosi Bay Coastal Reserve Forest, and has been proclaimed a World Heritage Site. This status has been bestowed on the area due to its vast biodiversity, bird life, turtle nesting, fishing, high sand dunes, vegetation and a host of other attractions. The area between Kosi mouth and Bhanga Nek (17.5kms south) boasts the highest concentration of turtle nests in the world.
The Kosi Bay area is also home to the Amatonga Tribe who have lived and fished there for centuries with their unique reeded fish traps. Being a World Heritage site, it is unspoilt and unpolluted, and an absolute wonder that must be experienced in South Africa. The Kosi mouth also offers another unique opportunity to snorkel over the only Coral Reef in the world, which is located inside an estuary.
Information about Amangwane Camp
Amangwane Camp is a rustic but comfortable reeded chalet camp. All chalets have en suites with hot and cold running water. Each chalet is equipped with two single beds. All bed linen and towels are provided. Guests are requested to please use water very sparingly as it is pumped in from about five kilometers away. All food provided will be typical South African meals like Braais, Potjies, etc. Naturally, seafood will be on the menu at least once during your stay. Amangwane Camp has a small generator, which provides sufficient electricity to light up the lapa area and to charge your cell phone batteries, camera batteries, etc. There is clear cell phone reception at Amangwane Camp. A covered lapa, tables and chairs are available for dining, fly tying, tackle preparation, etc. Alternatively, feel free to gather around the campfire under the stars to enjoy the peace and splendour of Maputaland.
Fishing
This is Kingfish country, and is renowned for the numerous Caranx (kingfish) species, especially the Giant Kingfish or Ignobilis Kingfish (GT's). While these fish are prevalent throughout the year, the period from January to April historically shows the greatest concentration of them at the mouth, when they arrive in huge numbers to feed on the Grunter. Many Giants in the 15kg to 25kg range have been hooked and landed at the mouth. If this is your kind of challenge, then do not hesitate to book for this unique opportunity to flyfish for them. Kosi Bay is a fly fishers paradise and also offers pristine flyfishing on almost secluded beaches for the other plentiful sub-tropical species like Grunter, Springer, Salad Fish, Wave Garrick, River Snapper, Pickhandle Barracuda, and a host of other saltwater species. A dedicated guide will be close by at all times to offer expert assistance and advice. Fishing times will coincide with the Kosi Bay Coastal Reserve gate opening and closing times being 06H00 to 18H00.
Special night fishing permits are only allowed two days before and after the spring tides. These can be arranged on your behalf. Please note that the cost of these night permits are NOT included in the package price and will be for your account..
Your Hosts
Your guide will be Andrew Sutherland who is highly familiar with the fish behaviour, fishing conditions, tides, weather patterns, fly selection, tippets, etc. He also has vast knowledge on the flora and fauna of the area. One of your hosts will be Elmon Mkonto, who has lived in Kosi Bay almost all his life. Feel free to ask him if you could visit one of his many traditional fish traps, or try out one of his traditional fishing spears. Bamba Flyfishing Adventures is pleased to assure you that you will be in good hands during your entire visit to Kosi Bay.
