Architects : William B Barbourn - 1931 -This building was designed in what Art Deco purists would call 'Style Moderne'. Unlike other examples, it is devoid of any external decoration but has a very a strong tie to the styling of trains, planes and ships of the period. The original fenestration included curved glass in the corner windows.
Of note is the entrance canopy and a very fine foyer in wood panelling strongly influenced by Art Deco and chrome sconces. Fitzsimons Snake Park : Venom filled, hair raising park located at 240 Lower Marine Parade, Golden Mile.This snake park is home to hundreds of indigenous and exotic snakes. There are demonstrations and talks that are given five times daily (10a, 11:30a, 1p, 2:30p and at 3:30p) except during the holiday season.
The Kingdom of the Zulu has more than 100 recognized gliding spots and some of the most beautiful terrain to fly over. Kloof Gorge just outside the city of Durban, this spectacular gorge provides ideal conditions. It's not a cross-country site but on a good day you can glide for hours. Microlighting is a fast growing sport in the Kingdom of the Zulu with many clubs offering instruction, scenic flights and cross-country trips. Popular spots include La Mercy and Ballito on the North Coast and Cato Ridge near Durban.
Microlighting along the coast is great fun especially when you can see dolphins and the occasional whale frolicking in the water.
The annual sardine migration that takes place along the South Coast every year in June provides microlighters with a unique spectacle of massive shoals being chased by packs of sharks and dolphin. This is a sight you cannot see anywhere else in the world.
Parachuting at Oribi Airport, Pietermaritzburg (60km form Durban), is the top parachuting venue in the Kingdom of the Zulu.
