About Currys Post
browse (1 / 4)

The main route between Pietermaritzburg and the interior ran through the area now known as Currys Post which has become a place of historical significance. Named after the Curry family who settled and established an overnight wagon and cart stop, Currys Post became well known as a watering hole and place of rest for the weary travellers. During the Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars the route became an important military highway between the Pietermaritburg HQ and the Ladysmith garrisons.

Dating back even further, there are remnants of hunting camps and stone age tools, revealing that the region was settled in Stone Age times. Now cattle, dairy and vegetable farms are surrounded by scenic commercial and natural forests. The area has numerous well-stocked trout and bass dams within a 10km radius and there are other leisure activities in the form of golf clubs such as Boschoek, Howick Golf Club, Mooi River Golf Club, Sakabula Golf Club.

If bass and trout fishing in the dam or river is your reason for visiting, fishing excursions can be arranged at a number of farms within the immediate area and farmers usually charge per rod. There are a number of Nature Reserves and Umgeni, Midmar, Karkloof, Kamberg, Loteni, and a short drive away. The Midmar and Albert Falls Dam's attract water sports lovers who utilise the facilities for yachting, water skiing, paddling and other water sports. The famous annual Midmar Mile in February of each year draws avid swimmers and supporters to this area as everything centres around the dam.
