Chelmsford Reserve
The Chelmsford Nature Reserve is situated on the Ngagane River, lying just 70 kilometers from Ladysmith. It is home to the third largest dam in KwaZulu Natal, a wonderful venue for outdoor activities or simply relaxing and soothing the soul through the beautiful swimming facilities offered, various water sports, or soaking up the famous KZN sun!
It consists of a large game park and the grasslands, provide access to some of the most prominent animals such as; rhino, wildebeest, zebra, blesbok, springbok. One also gets a chance to spot the blue crane, marsh owl, denham’s bustard and many others. The 217 bird species in the Chelmsford Nature Reserve are notable, all with different colours, shapes and sizes. These include Egyptian and spur winged goose, great crested grebe, comb duck, pink-billed lark, black-bellied bustard, African grass-owl and bigger birds like the yellow-billed duck, greater flamingo, lesser flamingo, whiskered tern, osprey and a resident pair of fish eagles.
There is never a boring day at this reserve; Chelmsford Dam is popular for providing visitors and local’s ample carp and bass fishing. With sailing and power boating resources, water-skiing and horse-rides this reserve promises to be a memorable experience for anyone who sets foot in this remarkable area.
