Chelmsford Camp

Located on the Ngagane River in the Northern KwaZulu-Natal just less than three hours drive from Gauteng is Chelmsford Game Reserve. Featuring the third largest dam in the Kwa Zulu Natal Province, the magnificent Ntshingwayo Dam, an exceptional spot for exciting water activities, including water skiing, jet skiing, kite surfing, canoing and boating as well as swimming and fun soaking up the sun.

Fresh water angling is a favorite activity on this serene stretch of water with great opportunities to reel in carp and scalies whilst the nature reserve invites visitors to outstanding game viewing prospects, with large herds of springbok, blesbok and red hartebeest, as well as a momentous family of the unique and elusive oribi antelope.

Chelmsford Camp accommodation

Established close to the edge of the Dam with splendid views across the water with the rolling hills as a backdrop, are eight sufficiently equipped five-bed chalets at Chelmsford Camp, incorporating two bedrooms, a bathroom, a lounge/dining room, kitchenette and barbecue facilities. Camping facilities are also offered at with views of the dam and the waterfront.

Chelmsford boasts two fully electrified campsites where tents and caravans can be accommodated, Leokop with 10 sites and Sandford with 21 sites. Communal modern ablutions have hot showers and baths, flush toilets and basins with washing facilities for dishes and laundry and barbecues are available for those big appetites after an action packed day at the dam.

Chelmsford is one of the few sheltered regions in KwaZulu-Natal that offers hunting and authentic rustic accommodation for hunters is supplied on the southern boundary of the dam at the Richgate hunting lodge in four five-bed chalets. A four-bed mountain hut is accessible for accommodation overnight at Cando Nature Reserve, simply 40 kilometers from Chelmsford into the Northern Drakensberg escarpment where steep gorges are filled by forests with wandering trails through the sandstone cliffs into yellow wood forests and wondrous waterfalls.
