Hike: Rhino Peak Hike
This is a wonderful peaceful area in the Southern Drakensberg! We hike 3kms to the spectacular Pillar Cave, which is our accommodation for 2 nights. We use the cave as a base to hike the 6kms to the summit, which is 3056m above sea level. Along the way we keep crossing a lovely clear, VERY drinkable river called the Mlambonja.
Itinerary:
We leave Pietermaritzburg about mid-day on Day 1, driving about 2 hours to the Garden Castle Resort, then we do an easy hike up to Pillar Cave (elevation 2000m), cook supper, and settle in for the night. Early on Day 2, we head for the summit - a high point of 3056 metres above sea level! After having lunch on the top, we return to the cave for a HUGE supper and a well-earned sleep. On Day 3 we wake up to an amazing view from our sleeping bags in the cave, with coffee or tea served in bed (for those who want it!). We take some time that morning just to soak in the area, suntan by the river, or scramble around exploring. Then, at our leisure, we hike back down to the vehicles and return to Pietermaritzburg. As a team we will cook our own food over camp stoves in the cave.
Option: if you are unable to leave Pietermaritzburg at mid-day on Day 1, then we can drive the 2 hours up to the Berg later, and sleep in a bunkhouse on the Giants Cup Trail that night (elevation 1840m). This means we get to have a lovely South African braai at the house. Very early on Day 2 we hike up to Pillar Cave (elevation 2000m), store our gear, and then head for the summit - a hard but rewarding day! Day 3 is as detailed above.
